Otter tracking

We want to know if otters are populating our bodies of water, and the best method to search for otters is by looking for tracks and faeces. One can best find otter tracks along river- and sandbanks. Therefore, good places to look for traces of otters are by bridges that have large, vegetation-free areas of sand. Otters will often use this area as a latrine as well.

On the following pages, the characteristics of river otter tracks will be described in greater detail as well as tracks from other animals, which could be mistaken for an otter’s. The next sections will also include the characteristics of otter faeces and how to decipher it from other types of animals’ faeces.
